The Union Gospel Mission of Yakima was established in 1936. Over the decades we have seen much growth and change in the city. We have also had an increase in the number of people to whom we serve and minister.

In the late 1980’s the Board of Directors and staff of the UGM recognized that the facility on Front Street was not meeting the needs of the homeless. Another location was sought on West Yakima Avenue in the historic Holtzinger Building. In 1990 a tragic fire destroyed the building and dampened our dreams. However, the faithfulness and fruitfulness of the Lord led us to an abandoned motel on North First Street. In 1996 we moved to the expanded location at 1300 North First Street.

Since then the UGM has experienced more opportunities to reach the lost of home and heart. Our financial gifts have not kept up with our growing ministry needs. As we looked at our non-cash donations we began to ask - "how can we be better stewards of the Lord? How can we multiply our donors’ investment in the UGM? Would we be wiser to sell antiques or collectibles and use the cash to better serve our recovery and youth program ministries? What do we do with existing facilities to maximize our outreach to the community? In what other ways can the UGM reach the hearts and souls of all those in our city?"

And so…. after much thought and prayer and research … the UGM Board of Directors was led by His direction to open a new ministry and outreach . We know by His Grace that this "store" will not take away from our giving to the poor – rather it will expand our services to the needy of our community.
